Cuba is a communist country. The locals we meet are – without exception – not very thrilled about it. A supermarket we go to has many empty shelves but lots of toilet paper. Our guide only shrugs. The shops are filled with whatever is currently available, not with what’s needed. What I do like though is that there are no advertisements anywhere. No pillars, no highway masts, no banners, no signs, nothing. Quite refreshing!
We are in Cuba for 4 days to take about 8 photos. You'd think that’s doable. In fact, it's quite challenging. Normally, for a shoot like this, you’d send a location scout ahead, so that you can get started immediately once the whole production team (stylist, photographer, photo assistant, cameraman, guide, driver) arrives. But that's not how we go about it. We always improvise. That often leads to good things, but sometimes it doesn't. Outside Havana, Cuba turns out to be surprisingly dull in terms of nature and landscapes. For the spectacular panoramic photo we need, things are getting more difficult. On the last day, when the sky was covered with threatening rain clouds, we managed to take the picture we needed.
When we are on the road for our campaigns, we go through a lot. The campaign photos always look amazing, but the reality is somewhat different.... Here are some snapshots we took during our trip. Simply click on them to get more info on what you’re looking at.
