Packaging and printed materials

Various types of cardboard and paper are used for our shoe boxes, inserts and other printed materials. Where applicable, FSC certification and its corresponding label are displayed on the packaging or printed material. To help shoes retain their shape during transport to stores, Van Bommel uses a curved piece of cardboard rather than crumpled paper filling. This requires less material than conventional paper stuffing. At the Dutch factory, paper and cardboard are collected together, separately from other waste. Plastic and organic waste are also collected separately. These waste streams are removed by a waste management company.

For its outer shipping cartons, the large boxes used to transport several shoe boxes from factory to retailer, Van Bommel uses telescopic two-piece cartons rather than the commonly used American-style folding cartons. A two-piece carton is more expensive and takes more work to assemble. It is also less sturdy and harder to stack on pallets. The advantage is that its height can be adjusted to the contents, reducing the amount of empty space transported.
